I am so sad to hear about the passing of Bill. I asked about him recently to a Roosevelt HS staff member and they told me the sad news. I ran with Bill during the 2007 Chicago Teachers Union election. We first met when he came to South Shore High School to visit me about being his running mate. As two history teachers, we hit it off. He always had kind words towards me and he never backed down from no one. Bill my friend, rest well.

It's of some comfort knowing Bill achieved such success and was surrounded by so many wonderful people...Diane Hurford Kirts N T class of '64

Bill was truly a Renaissance man. I knew him growing up in Winnetka, where my older brother Joe and he were good friends, and by his brother Chuck whom I have remained life-long friends with. Joe and Bill also went to college together. I always enjoyed Bill's zest for life, his dry humor, and my need to avoid him when over visiting at the Malugen household, for fear of losing my arm to him in an impromptu wrestling match. My condolences to Miriam and the rest of the family. He was a really good guy.

I had the honor and pleasure of knowing Bill since I reconnected in 2005 with his wife, Mimi, a dear friend and fellow Illinois Institute of Technology alum. Bill had a keen mind and stayed up on and focused on not only the politics of the day but the inner workings and politics of the Chicago Teachers Union. In our many shared meals and conversations, we agreed on or debated the issues of the day...and Bill, as a gifted conversationalist, always gave as good as he got. He will be missed and I will miss him for sure. I have the feeling that right now he is discussing how to rearrange heaven to operate more efficiently to his liking.

I am so sorry about Bill's passing. He was president of our class at New Trier, the most popular guy around and one of the very best athletes. And what a great student and example he was to others. It is truly wonderful to read about his career as a teacher. This is a cliché by now, but also true: heaven is for real and Bill is just a thought away from his family. You can be very sure that he is watching over you.
