To the family of Steve Tess:
Please accept my sincere condolences on Steve's passing.
You don't know me and that's my fault, as I will explain.
My name is Jon Anderson. I'm originally from Washington Island and 48 years ago today Steve, Bob Hacker (also of Sturgeon Bay), and I were stationed at Lackland Air Force Base outside San Antonio, Texas. We had traveled there together, three young men from Door County, off to serve our country in a war we didn't totally understand.
After basic training was completed we were assigned to various duty stations and our trio was split up. I lost track of Steve and Bob, although I often wondered what had become of them.
A short time ago, while in Sturgeon Bay, I had this brainstorm to check the local phone book. Bob wasn't listed, but Steve was.
Ironically the address listed was only a couple of houses east of where my aunt and uncle, Dora and Leo Vertz had spent their entire married life (704 Michigan). I drove to the house with full intentions of stopping, but when I arrived there was a crew there working on the house. Not wanting to interrupt, I kept on driving. I had my chance and I blew it.
The "take away" from all this, the lesson I've learned and hope to pass on to you, is never hesitate to renew old friendships and always let family and those close to you know how much they mean to you, because sometimes you just don't get a second chance.

Rest in peace Steve.
