James Walter Abrahamson

May 20, 1929 ~ December 7, 2012 (age 83) 83 Years Old


     James Walter Abrahamson, 83 of Valmy, died Friday morning, December 7, 2012 at his home with family at his side following a battle with cancer.

     He was born May 20, 1929 in Sturgeon Bay, the son of the late Walter Herman and Muriel (Potier) Abrahamson. After graduating from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1948, Jim served his country with the U.S. Marines from 1948 to 1952. As a member of "The Chosin Few," Jim survived a historical battle during the Korean War. The Battle of Chosin Reservoir is one of the most courageous battles in military history. On April 24, 1954 Jim married Helen M. Hanson at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Baileys Harbor.

     He started his auto body career with the Felhofer Brothers Dealership. In 1969, Jim established Valmy Motors in a partnership with Leroy Ehlers. He owned and operated his own auto body business in Valmy from 1979 until he retired in 2007. Jim managed and operated, up to his death, the Sevastopol Sanitary District for 37 years.

     Jim will be deeply missed by his wife, Helen; four children, James, Michael (Jody), (and their children, Rachel and Krista), daughter, Julie (Dan) Vandertie, (and their children, Karlee, Bridget and Austin), son, Steven (Brenda), (and their children, Nathan, Hannah and Isaac); three brothers, Lawrence (Margaret), Wallace (Dorothy), Thomas (Lois); sister, Theresa (Howard) Phillips; in-laws, Jean Widder, Eben (June) Hanson, Robert (Florence) Hanson, Don (Judy) Hanson, William (Virginia) Hanson, Florence (Don) Melchoir, Agnes Hanson, Joe Nelson; and many other friends.

     He was preceded in death by his parents; twin sister, Joyce; sister-in-law, Gertrude Abrahamson; nephews, Gary Abrahamson, James Hanson Jr., Timothy Hanson, Eben "Butch" Hanson III; sisters-in-law, Rosie Hanson, Carol Nelson, Margaret Kuehn; brothers-in-law, Rapheal Zak, Carlton Kuehn, Ruben Widder, Lawrence and James Hanson; and parents-in-law, Eben and Loretta Hanson.

     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, December 10, 2012 at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute with Rev. Robert Konkol OFM officiating. Military Honors will follow at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

     Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00p.m. on Sunday at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay and at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:30 a.m. A parish wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening at Huehns Funeral Home.
