William Sampone Obituary

William Wallace Sampone, 77, formerly of Baileys Harbor, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 26, 2021 at Bishop’s Court Senior Residential Care in Allouez with family at his side.

He was born September 23, 1944 in Sturgeon Bay, the son of Carl and Margaret Grace (Burlo) Sampone. Bill grew up in Sturgeon Bay and attended St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church and Sturgeon Bay High School.

On March 23, 1963, he married Margaret Ellen Husby at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Egg Harbor. Bill worked for Lindsay Soft Water in Sturgeon Bay, home construction, Peterson Builders, Inc., Bay Shipbuilding Co., and then was self-employed for the later part of his working career, helping with various remodeling and painting projects, hauling cattle, and then with lawn maintenance and snow removal. He was a hard worker and great problem solver.

Bill loved horses, barrel racing, and giving horse drawn sleigh riding. He belonged to the Cherryland Horse Club and the Jacksonport Trailblazers Snowmobile Club. Bill was a former Jacksonport Town Supervisor. Even though he was born and raised in Wisconsin, he enjoyed rooting for the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Cubs, just to offer a little “friendly opposition” with family and friends he’d be watching the (Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers) games with. Bill and Margaret were blessed with nearly 56 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on January 19, 2019. Bill moved into Bishop’s Court in Allouez later that same year.

He will be missed by his children, Laurie (John) Haberli of the Town of Jacksonport, William "Bill" (Cheryl) Sampone of New London, and Julie (Wade) Jonas of the Town of Jacksonport; grandchildren, Katie (friend, Aaron Renier [and his son, Isaiah]) Jensen and Molly Haberli, Brooke (Reece) Nelson and Ashley (friend, Phil Jedras [and his son, Dominik]) Sampone, and Hunter Jonas and Pam Clement; great-grandchildren; Andrew Jensen, Rhett and Reid Nelson, and Mercedes, Mackensie, Masen, and Miles Clement; brother, Carl Sampone, Jr. of Sturgeon Bay; stepfather, Pat Lake of Sturgeon Bay; step-siblings, Mark (Nancy) Lake of Sturgeon Bay, Greg (Debbie) Lake of Green Bay, Shelly (Bill) Cowans of Green Bay, Vicky (Pat) Rankin of the Town of Sevastopol, and Dan (Melissa) Lake of Howard; sisters-in-law, Mary Rohr, Cathy Gerdmann, Kris (Ranni) Husby-Nelson, all of the Town of Jacksonport, and Mary Husby of Keshena; nieces and nephews; and other relatives.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; granddaughter, Amber Haberli; great-granddaughter, Everly Mae Nelson; brothers-in-law, Peter, Mark, John, Maurice, Charles, and James Husby, Harold Gerdmann, Jr., and Ralland “Otto” Rohr; and other relatives.

His life will be honored with a memorial service held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, October 1, 2021 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. At the request of the Sampone family, those in attendance of the visitation and/or service are kindly asked to wear a face mask and maintain social distancing.
