Tom "TJ" Johnson Obituary

Thomas Norbert Johnson, 70, formerly of Sturgeon Bay, currently of Wausau, passed away early Tuesday morning, November 10, 2020 at Marshfield Clinic following complications of cancer.

He was born September 17, 1950 in Duvall, Kewaunee County, the son of the late Norbert Mathew and Lillian Ann (Fabry) Johnson. Tom graduated from Luxemburg-Casco High School in 1968. He received his Associate Degree in Marketing from Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College in 1982. Tom served his country with the United States Navy from 1971 until 1973.

On October 12, 1985, he married Valerie Beth Hanson at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay.

Tom worked for Portside Builders in Sturgeon Bay from 1979 until 1996. From 1996 to 2009 he was proud to have owned and operated his own construction business, Johnson Services, Inc. until his retirement. In 2010, Tom and Valerie moved to the Wausau area.

Music was Tom’s passion. He recorded hundreds of hours of playlists over the years. Tom especially enjoyed listening to the Blues. It could not be overstated if you were to say he enjoyed the outdoors. Fishing, camping, hiking, snowshoeing, reading, and entirely remodeling his own home, would give you a good idea of Tom’s interests. To describe Tom to you we would say, he was entirely devoted to Val and their 35 years of marriage. Tom was a man of integrity who worked in truth and facts and used humor in any situation to ease the atmosphere with those around him. Others would say he was a colorful conversationalist. Tom’s work ethic was strong, and he always looked out for his employees and co-workers, but Tom always made time for his family and friends to enjoy life with him. Recently, he reflected on his life, looking back on it with Val and about his parents living to very old ages and he not being able to reach that age. His response to that fact, “...but I had fun.”

His family includes, his dear wife, Valerie of Wausau; siblings, Larry (Peggy) Johnson of Pulaski, Ron (Michelle) Johnson of Green Bay, Lee (Kathy) Johnson of Luxemburg, and sister and goddaughter, Lori Johnson of De Pere; parents-in-law, William (Virginia) Hanson of Sturgeon Bay; siblings-in-law, Chris Peterson, Marla (Jeff) Lustila, both of Sturgeon Bay, Phil (Beth) Hanson of Brussels, and Amy (Jeff) Gauger of Mequon; many dear nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; niece, Jordyn; great-nephew, Mathew; and brothers-in-law, Chuck Sternard and Lee Peterson.

Due to COVID-19, a memorial service for limited family and close friends will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay with Rev. Dr. Matthew R. Knapp, Sr. officiating. Military honors will follow at the funeral home.
