Kathleen Maxson Obituary

Kathleen Kay Maxson passed away on February 10, 2024, at 87 years of age. She will be remembered and dearly missed for her abundant love for her friends and family, boundless hospitality, and indomitable spirit.

Kathleen was born on May 14,1936, in Coldwater, MI to parents Perry and Vesta Bronson. She grew up engaged in 4-H and working on her parents’ farm. She met her high school sweetheart, Mervyn Maxson, on the school bus; they married in June 1954, once Kathleen graduated high school.

After Mervyn’s graduation in civil engineering, they moved to Fort Belvoir, VA, where Kathleen worked as a requisition clerk for the Army Corps of Engineers. Kathleen and Mervyn moved often over the next several years due to Mervyn’s career and Kathleen loved the process of fixing up and decorating their many homes. Their daughter Deidre was born in 1958. Over the next several years, Kathleen taught 4-H sewing, served on boards and taught Sunday School. She was an accomplished seamstress who could sew anything from dolls’ clothes to quilts and square-dancing costumes and took great pride in her eye for identifying distressed antiques and then refinishing them into beautiful pieces.

In 1995, Kathleen and Mervyn decided to split their retirement between the sunny Rio Grande Valley in Texas and Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Together they enjoyed travel, birding, gardening, researching family history, 20 years of square dancing, and activities with the First Presbyterian Church in McAllen, TX and the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church. Kathleen was also a member and officer of the Salona Club in Sturgeon Bay for many years.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Deidre Maxson Wells and Mervyn, her dear husband of 69 years. She is survived by her son-in-law David (Susan) Wells, her grandchildren Rachel (Dan) Johnson, Jonathan (Meg) Wells, Jeremy Wells, and Micaela Wells, and her great-grandchildren Fiona Johnson and Bo Johnson. An interment for both Kathleen Maxson and Mervyn Maxson will be held at 11am on Saturday April 6 at East Gilead Cemetery, 859-861 Block Rd, Bronson, MI.
