Joan L. Contratto, 89, passed away early Monday morning, June 14, 2021 at Door County Medical Center.
She was born March 9, 1932, in Carbondale, Pennsylvania to Raymond and Louise (Mannion) Scanlon. Joan attended Ben Franklin High School in Carbondale. In 1970, she married John M. Contratto in Hilbert, Wisconsin
Joan had worked as a social worker in parish business for 20 years. After moving to Sturgeon Bay in 1970, she worked as a cook at the Fawn Restaurant until 1990. Joan worked in health care as a nurse’s aide for Porter Kiehnau and the Dorchester. She volunteered at Sevastopol Elementary School when her children started attending school there. Joan helped with the music department, and on playground duty, along with cafeteria duty. She also was able to help at Sawyer school with aid to 2nd grade students and was glad to have the opportunity to help at Peninsula Christian School with Janette Haugen, teacher there.
Joan enjoyed being a mom and grandma. She was the taxi for her grandchildren whenever they needed her. Joan was the sweetest, most kindhearted person you could ever have met. She was a fantastic cook, loved music, and helping others. We thought she may have had angel wings under her coat. She loved storytelling and had to be Irish because of the Irish Blarney she was full of.
Surviving family include John Contratto; children, Martin (Dawn) Contratto, Dawn (Shawn) Daoust both of Sturgeon Bay; grandchildren, Tyler (Kelly) Daoust, Zachary and Alexis Daoust; great-grandson, Micah Daoust; sister, Ann Scanlon of Pennsylvania.
Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers, Robert, Eugene, Patrick; and sister, Marylou Scanlon.
At Joan’s request there will be no public service.
“While living here, I was blessed with being Saved and Filled with the Holy Spirit with Pastor Harvey Seiler at the Gospel of Peace in Forestville. I have been blessed to have been led to Family Worship Center in Sturgeon Bay and the leadership of Pastor Mark there.”
