Jan Johnson, 88 years, of the Town of Sevastopol, passed away Monday, November 13, 2023.
She was born October 13, 1935, in Carroll, IA, the daughter of the late Walter and Colette (Hinners) Bock. Jan graduated from St. Angela’s High School Academy in Carroll, IA. She received her Medical Technology degree from Creighton University. On December 28, 1957, she married Richard Johnson in Carroll, IA.
While Richard was attending college out East, Jan worked for Eastman Kodak as a lab analyst. Starting her family would eventually have her time devoted to raising her six children. As children grew and went to school, she was able to start her professional working career. Jan worked as a Medical Technologist at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. Always community minded, she volunteered for various ventures such as docent at Milwaukee Art Museum. She started the preschool program during Sunday Mass at St. Mary’s in Waukesha. She reorganized the fund-raising auction at Catholic Memorial High School and ran the same event for St. Colletta’s in Jefferson. She was employed by Channel 10 in Milwaukee. At age 60, Jan was recruited by World Financial Group where she became a financial advisor holding five security licenses at age 60.
Jan enjoyed snow skiing, cross country skiing, playing golf, swimming, raced in triathlons, was an accomplished seamstress, loved to sew and enjoyed participating in and facilitating Marriage Encounter groups for 40 years. In high school she liked music and played the violin. More recently she was known as a spontaneous singer breaking out in song just for her grandchildren. This love of music would lead her to volunteer and serve as the President of the Associates and as a member of the Board for the Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Door County. She also participated in the Whitefish Bay Association serving on the board and as treasurer.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Richard; six children, Thomas (Lyn) of Oregon, WI, Michael (Kathy) of Alpharetta, GA, Steven (Patti) of Waukesha, Mary Beth (Bruce) Simones of La Crosse, Nancy (Terrance) Congdon of Appleton, David (Chandra) of Sister Bay, Jenine Johnson of Naples, FL; 19 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Dennis and Dale; and two sisters, Judith and Carleen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 1, 2023, at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute with Fr. Matthew Rappl officiating. Entombment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church December 1, 2023 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:40 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory for Birch Creek Music Performance Center, or St. John Bosco Catholic School.
