Obituary

Janet Marie DeVito, 61, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away in the comfort of her home, early Monday morning, September 11, 2023 with her family at her side.

She was born March 22, 1962 to Curran Clark Wilbanks and Margaret Phillips (Slaughter) Wilbanks in Kirkwood, MO. Jan's family moved to Wisconsin, and they resided in the Town of Nasewaupee. She grew up Catholic and attended Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. Jan graduated from Southern Door High School with class of 1980.

She enlisted to serve her country with the United States Army, entering into active duty in August 1980. Jan served with the military police. While in the Army, she met Richard "Rick" Thomas DeVito. They were united in marriage on December 22, 1982, in Lingby, Denmark. Jan was honorably discharged from service in August 1983 with the rank of Specialist.

She returned home to Wisconsin and went on to study economics at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay where she earned her bachelor's degree. Jan continued her studies and earned her master's in environmental policy and planning.

She worked for Emerson Motors in Sturgeon Bay from 1996 until their closing. Jan then worked for Samara Jewelery Designs until its closing and most recently for Peninsula Jewelers since 2018, both in Sturgeon Bay.

She also cared for her family at home. Jan's family (husband and children) was her biggest joy in life. She adored her puppies, Chip and Charlie.

Jan's love will live on in the hearts of her husband, Rick; three children, Margaret (Paul Lasswell) DeVito of Milwaukee, Celia DeVito, and Richard Anthony "Tony" DeVito, both of Appleton; four siblings, Margaret (Henry) Hlavaty of Willowbrook, IL, Robert (Sharon) Wilbanks of Charlotte, NC, Stephen (Jennifer) Wilbanks of Sedolia, MO, and Nancy (Tim) Hendrickson of Eden Prairie, MN; nieces and nephews; other relatives; and friends.
