James Haskell Obituary

James W. Haskell, age 80, of the Town of Sturgeon Bay, was called home on Monday morning, October 7, 2024, at Sturgeon Bay Health Services.

He was born on January 8, 1944, in Sturgeon Bay, the son of the late Dewey and Louise (Diefenbach) Haskell. He graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1963. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served during the Vietnam Conflict and was stationed in Japan. He briefly left the military to take care of his mother after his father passed away. James re-enlisted in the Army Reserves serving for 20 years, most notably during Operation Desert Storm before being honorably discharged.

James worked for Esquire Cleaners delivering linens for business throughout the county and Badger Northland where he met his future wife, Janice. He worked for Taylor Lumber for over 20 years before semi retiring. His last job was for Door County Parks Department maintaining the parks in the area.

On October 3, 1970, James was united in marriage to Janice C. Thiry at the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church. James deeply cared for his wife Janice. He would spend as much time as he could with her. When she became ill, he made sure she made every doctor and dialysis appointment. When she had to be moved to the Dorchester, he would make sure to come visit her every day until her passing on August 17, 2012. The couple was married for 41 years.

James was an avid bowler. He bowled during his time in Japan, at Cherry Lanes, and was in a number of different leagues. He loved woodworking. He made toys for kids and church fundraisers. His woodworking also allowed him to do different side jobs in carpentry. James also enjoyed model trains. Most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially his great nieces and nephews, and his dog Boomer.

James was an active member at the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church.  He would usher, assist on different  boards, and would help disabled parishioners and those needed assistance get in and out of church.

James is survived by his nieces and nephews and his dog, Boomer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice; parents; and siblings, Bernice Whipple, Gladys May, Eugene Haskell, Vivian Jacobe, Roger Haskell, and Russell Haskell.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024, at the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church, 323 S. 5th Ave, Sturgeon Bay, with Rev. Dr. Matthew R. Knapp, Sr. officiating.
