Edward Elliott Obituary

Edward Preston Elliott, 89, of Sister Bay, passed away Sunday morning, May 2, 2021 at Good Samaritan Society-Scandia Village.

He was born November 28, 1931 in Crawfordville, IN, the son of Baptist minister, Rev. Beverly Esmond Elliott and Geneva (Burgess) Elliott. Ed attended High School in Terre Haute, IN and worked at a local funeral home, helping clean and maintain the funeral vehicles and drive the hearse. Upon his graduation, he went on to attend Indiana State University in Terre Haute for one year on an academic scholarship. But Ed's childhood dream was to attend Wabash College in Crawfordsville, which was right across the street from where he grew up, and so he transferred to Wabash College for his sophomore year and studied history. He met Patricia Louise Todd at a dance in Terre Haute, and they were united in marriage in 1951. While attending Wabash College, Ed was employed as an estimator for printing jobs during the night shift at R. R. Donnelley & Sons.  After graduating from Wabash, he eventually went on to earn his Masters Degree in education from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA.

Ed went to teach American History (among other history courses) at New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL in the late 1950s where his wife, Pat also worked as a bookkeeper. Ed also served as sophomore boys advisor/chairman (as assistant to the principal), but his true passion was in teaching. He and Pat “retired” in 1987 and moved to Door County, WI, and resided in the Town of Liberty Grove on Hillcrest Road, just north of the Village of Sister Bay. Ed was a substitute history teacher at Gibraltar High School in Fish Creek and occasionally taught at Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College in Sturgeon Bay.

He loved riding his bike with Pat throughout northern Door County, traveling all of the back roads. Ed was frequently (recognized and) greeted by former students, “Hey Mr. Elliott!”, while out and about in northern Door County. He liked putting together U-control model airplanes and reading, especially romance novels. Even though "Ed always knew how they were going to end," he often reflected that he "enjoyed the story and how it got to the end." One of his favorite authors was Danielle Steele. Ed was raised Baptist and was even a minister for a short time, himself. While in Door County, he and Pat attended Hope United Church of Christ in Sturgeon Bay.

Ed and Pat shared 65 years of marriage together. She died December 4, 2016.

Ed will be missed by his two daughters and one son, Peggy Elliott of Sturgeon Bay, Marjorie Fallon of Lacey, WA, and Jeffrey Elliott of Sturgeon Bay; four grandchildren, Katie (Kate Casgrove) Makolondra, Ryan and Jesse Powell, and Melissa Elliott; four great-grandchildren, Sophia, Joe, and Lucy, and Ike.

He was preceded in death by parents, Rev. B. Esmond and Geneva Elliott; wife, Pat; and siblings-in-law, Samuel (Mary Lou) Todd and Susie (Robert) Galbraith.

Ed will be laid to rest beside his wife, Pat, in the Hope Memorial Gardens (at Hope Church) in Sturgeon Bay, with a private committal for family. No public services will be held.

"Our family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Scandia Village for the really good care you gave to our father. You are all wonderful people."
