Doraleigh (Poulton) Athanatos

     Doraleigh Athanatos died on July 24, 2022 in Sturgeon Bay, where she had been a patient in a nursing home for two years. She was born June 6, 1934 in Mundelein, Illinois, daughter of the late Donald Leigh Poulton and Cora Wright Poulton. She attended Libertyville High School and graduated in 1952 as the class Salutatorian. She then attended Knox College in Galesburg, IL and graduated in 1956 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. There, she met her future husband, William Athanatos, and they were married in 1954.

     Doraleigh lived in Waukegan, IL from 1956 until 1958, where she taught at Whittier Elementary School. She moved back to Mundelein (Sylvan Lake) and lived there until 2020. She taught elementary school in Libertyville and Fremont, IL.

     Doraleigh had a daughter, Mary Leigh, who was born in 1963 and a son, William Michael, who was born in 1964.

     She was preceded in death by her husband, William Athanatos in 2016; daughter, Mary Conn in 2016; and son, William Michael in 2020.

     Doraleigh is survived by her brothers, David Poulton (Marlene) of Sturgeon Bay, WI and Jim Poulton (Connie) of Sparks, NV; nephews, David Poulton of Boulder, CO and Donald Poulton (Leslie) of Modesto, CA; nieces, Deborah Edwards (Ronald) of Dallas, TX, Donna Fleischer (Jeff) of Littleton, CO, and Melissa Glenn (Max) of Sparks, NV; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

     A memorial service will be held at the Community Protestant Church, 410 N Prairie Ave., Mundelein, IL 60060 on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow the service.

     Inurnment will be at Willow Lawn Memorial Gardens in Vernon Hills, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Doraleigh’s name to the Community Protestant Church in Mundelein.
