Daniel Johnson Obituary

Daniel Anthony Johnson, 76, of Sturgeon Bay, fell asleep in the loving presence of his wife, Marilyn, at home and awoke in the arms of the Lord, Tuesday evening, April 5, 2022.

He was born July 20, 1945 in Sturgeon Bay, the son of Harvey Maxwell Johnson and Marion Barbara (Dier) Johnson. Dan grew up attending St. Joseph Grade School and Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay, where he received the sacraments of baptism, first communion, and confirmation. He graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School with the class of 1963. Dan worked as a master carpenter for Palmer Johnson Yachts in Sturgeon Bay out of high school. He was drafted to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps, entering into service August 5, 1965 and was honorably discharged from the Marines on February 4, 1966. During that time, Dan completed electrician classes and training.

He returned home to Sturgeon Bay and worked as a master carpenter for Baudhuin Yacht Harbor for a couple years. Dan first met Marilyn Marie Renier in 1965 at a sock hop at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay, and they were united in marriage on November 29, 1969 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He built their home and eventually started his own business, Johnson Manufacturing, in 1970. Dan had a passion for woodworking and cabinet construction. He would put his soul into every project, and would occasionally work through the night, into the early hours of the morning, oftentimes with his favorite corn cob pipe. Dan was working right up until three weeks prior to his passing, when his health prevented him from doing so. He wasn't usually one to vocalize about his health or complain; he just (quietly) went about his business.

When Dan wasn't working in the shop, he enjoyed hunting - out by family in Brussels. He liked to fish - on the bay with Marilyn and on Lake Michigan with his buddies, Gene Ewaskowitz and John Andre. Dan had an appreciation for early military history. He mastered the art of flat top guitar making and enjoyed sharing his knowledge and technique with his friends, Charles Meseck, Paul Lutze, and Chas Schink, who promised to carry on and continue sharing that art.

Dan will be deeply missed by his, dear wife Marilyn, with whom he was blessed to share over 52 years of marriage with; brother, Timothy (Melinda) Johnson of Carlsville; siblings-in-law, Wanda Bouche, Roderick Renier, both of Sturgeon Bay, Roxanne (Scott) Sperling of Manitowoc, and Holly (Peder) Lauscher of Sturgeon Bay; nieces and nephew, Emma Johnson, Jennifer (Shawn) Fischer, Amanda (Dan) Sallinen, Samantha (Joe) Gibas, Anthony Joseph “AJ” Kasten, and April Kasten; other relatives; and friends.

He was preceded in death by parents; sister, Mary (Dcn. Kenneth) Kopydlowski; and other relatives.
Dan's life will be honored privately by family with a memorial service held at the St. Joseph Cemetery Chapel with Fr. Robert Stegmann, of St. Joseph Parish, officiating. He will be laid to rest in the St. Joseph Cemetery Columbarium.

Memorials may be given in Dan's name for the Wisconsin Humane Society-Door County Campus or Unity (Hospice and Palliative Care).

"A heartfelt thanks goes out to the Unity Hospice staff for the compassionate care you gave to Dan."
