Clara Horvath Obituary

Clara Szilady Horvath was born in Hungary on January 18, 1924 and died in Sturgeon Bay on October 20, 2023, just after turning 99 3/4.

She and her fiancé, Arpad Horvath, fled Hungary in 1945 and reunited in Germany, where they married later that year. Their son, Arpad "Arps", was born in Germany in 1948 and the family immigrated to the United States in 1951, living and working in Chicago, IL until moving to Milwaukee in 1963 to work for the Pabst Brewing Company.

Arpad Sr. passed away in 1982 and Clara moved to Sturgeon Bay to be closer to her son’s family in 2006.

Clara loved to play cards. She loved to board the casino bus whenever possible. She was a world traveler who spoke four languages. Clara was reluctant to leave Milwaukee (and its Hungarian spice shops) behind, but truly grew to love Sturgeon Bay and especially the friends she made there. She most especially loved the Door County YMCA, where she was a regular participant well into her 90’s.

Clara’s family thanks each and every friend who helped with transportation to the Senior Center and the Y. We thank Dr. Michalski and Laura from the Clinic in Sturgeon Bay, staff at Bayside Senior Care, Dr. Gorshynsky and the wonderful nurses at the Door County Medical Center, and the tremendous caregivers at Unity Hospice - and, as always, her very special loyal friends, her "girls."

In addition to her son Arps and his wife Pat, Clara is survived by her brother Julius and his wife Brigitta in Germany; Julius and Brigitta’s family, Miklos and Sylvie with their sons Amos and Jeremos, in Hungary; and two grandchildren, Kevin in Chicago, IL, and Pieta and her husband, Luke, in Gettysburg, PA.

A memorial open house will be held at the Door County YMCA, 1900 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 on Thursday, November 2, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Please join us if you are able!

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Unity Hospice (2366 Oak Ridge Circle, De Pere, WI 54115) or to the Door County YMCA. The family asks that, in honor of Clara, you treat yourself to a scoop of coffee ice cream whenever you have the urge!
