Betty Mae Holland, 96, of Sister Bay, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2024, with her family by her side.
She was born May 11, 1928, in Sister Bay, WI, the daughter of Albin and Pearl (Brodd) Mickelson. Betty graduated Gibraltar High School. She went on to study at Door Kewaunee Teacher College in Algoma, WI and later at Sawyer School of Business in Waukegan, IL.
On July 7, 1951, she married John Holland and would celebrate 59 years of marriage before John's death in 2010. Betty and John lived in Sister Bay, WI, Edgewood, MD, while John was in the service, Chicago, IL, for 3 years and Lincolnshire, IL for 36 years.
Betty taught at Wildwood School from 1948 to 1952 before they moved to Illinois. She worked as a Secretary for Baxter International in Deerfield, IL for 19 years until she retired in 1993. Betty and John moved back to Sister Bay to enjoy their retirement years and were happy again to be active in the Sister Bay Moravian Church.
She was a member of Sister Bay Moravian Church prior to moving to Illinois, and First Presbyterian Church of Deerfield for 35 years. She taught Sunday School, was a Den Mother in Lincolnshire. Betty loved spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling, sewing, knitting, reading and serving church.
Betty will be missed by her son, Jeffrey (Jill Harkaway) Holland of Sturgeon Bay, WI; and two daughters, Karen Lewis of Bloomington, MN, and Susan (Kevin) Heffernan of Lake Geneva, WI; grandchildren, David (Brooke) Lewis, Megan (Jeff) Yates, Jessica (Jared Nellis) Holland, Jack Holland, Kirsten (Noble) Rundman, and Amy Erickson; and great grandchildren, Everett Nellis, Abby Yates, Reid Lewis, Tate Lewis, Connor Yates and Nova Nellis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Holland; parents, Albin and Pearl (Brodd) Mickelson, and sisters, June Bell and Lucille (Richard) Kostka.
Betty's life will be honored with a memorial service held at Sister Bay Moravian Church, 10924 Old Stage Rd, Sister Bay, on Friday, August 30, 2024, at 11:00am, with Rev. Kerry Krauss, officiating. She will be laid to rest in Sister Bay Moravian Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30am until time of service at Sister Bay Moravian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to Sister Bay Moravian Church.
