Allen Walter Jacobson, "Jake" to all who knew and loved him, 81, of Plover, passed away in the loving arms of his family June 17, 2023, at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay. Jake and Mary were visiting Door County, a family favorite vacation spot, to celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary.
Jake was born April 22, 1942, in Milwaukee, the son of Walter Jacobson and Mildred (Larson) Jacobson. Jake grew up on the family farm in Iola and attended Northland Lutheran Church. He graduated from Iola High School with the class of 1960. Jake initially went on to study education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He enlisted to serve his country with the United States Navy, entering active duty on October 16, 1961. Jake completed Hospital Corps School and served as a Hospitalman (E-3) while in the Navy. He remained on active duty until he was transferred to the Naval Reserves on October 15, 1964. Jake was honorably discharged from the Naval Reserves on July 24, 1967.
He returned home to Wisconsin and continued his studies at UWSP. There, Jake met Mary Kozlowski. They were married on June 6, 1970, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Milladore. They lived in Amherst before moving to Plover. He and Mary were blessed with two daughters: Krista and Rebecca.
Jake owned Hunter’s Corner in Stevens Point for ten years before returning to school to receive his bachelor's degree in education. He was a special education teacher for Brookwood Junior High and High School in Ontario, WI until his retirement.
Jake and Mary were members of St. Joseph Parish in Stevens Point. Over the years, he enjoyed playing tennis, softball, bowling, and especially golf. Jake even got a hole-in-one on a 188-yard par 3 at Glacier Wood Golf Club in Iola. It was a foggy day, and he was golfing with his buddies. Jake initially thought he lost his ball or hit it into a hazard and came to find the ball was actually in the hole! His love for golfing was shared by his wife who also had a hole-in-one. They're one of the rare couples who can make that claim. Jake was a huge fan of WI sports, and his favorite broadcaster was Bob Uecker. Jake was a curious person and knew something about everything. He loved history and was an avid reader, with The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings being some of his favorite stories. He was creative and witty, many know this having received one of his rhyming poems or songs. Simply, Jake was a good man and had a wonderful sense of humor - he was a true feminist and old-school gentleman. He was always ready to help family, friends, students, and even strangers.
He will be missed by his beloved wife, Mary, whom he described as his “encourager” and “best friend”; two daughters, Rebecca and Krista; his sister, Shirley Jacobson; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Ron) Scholze and Kathy (Jerry) Kruse; nieces, Brenda Kruse and Kim (Chris) Inda; and many other relatives; and friends.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Fr. Dan, Richard, and Jack Kozlowski, and his "granddog," Sampson.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1709 Wyatt Avenue, Stevens Point, WI 54481 with Fr. Todd Mlsna as celebrant. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
Lunch will be served at the church, immediately following the service. The family would also like to invite you to continue sharing stories and memories about Jake at Final Score, 908 Maria Drive, Stevens Point from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
Jake will be laid to rest in Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King, WI, N2665 County Road QQ, Waupaca, WI 54981, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, with military honors by the United States Navy. Those attending the graveside committal are to be to the cemetery by 9:40 a.m. and are to park in the gathering procession lanes upon arrival.
