William "Bill" John Anschutz

October 3, 1939 ~ February 7, 2017 (age 77) 77 Years Old


     William “Bill” Anschutz, 77, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away early Tuesday morning, February 7, 2017 at Door County Medical Center ICU.

     He was born October 3, 1939 on the Bochek family farm near Valmy to Edwin and Elaine (Bochek) Anschutz. His father died when Bill was 14 at which time Bill went to work on Junior Haen’s farm until his marriage to Sarah. On November 29, 1958, he married Sarah R. Tanck at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute. After his marriage, they moved to Two Rivers where he worked for a few years until returning to Sturgeon Bay to work for Sam Goldman Orchard. In 1964, he bought the Carlsville Bar and operated it until 1986. In 1980, he and Sarah, along with four other couples, built Country Sunshine Campground (now Harbour Village) until 1985 when it was sold. Bill worked for Harbour Village 10 years until his employment at Alpine Golf Course cutting greens, retiring in 2015.

     He was a lifelong member of S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Bill served as a county board supervisor for 20 years.

     Bill’s greatest love was his family. He enjoyed being outdoors, logging, riding his ATV, woodworking, hunting, fishing, rabbit hunting, and big game hunting out west. He was a strong, compassionate, caring man with a strong faith to guide him. He will be remembered for his joke telling, playing poker, sheepshead, cribbage and canasta.

     Bill is survived by his wife, Sarah; six daughters, Cindy Anschutz of Sturgeon Bay, Julie (George) Henkel of Sturgeon Bay, Carrie (Mike) Kostreva of Sturgeon Bay, Debbie Franke of Baileys Harbor, Patty (Billy) Bley of Jacksonport, Elaine (James) Stringer of Douglasville, GA; ten grandsons and five granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Anschutz of Sturgeon Bay, Janet Anschutz of Rockwood (near Manitowoc); and his faithful four-legged companion, “Dolly.”

     He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Ernest “Buck” Dixon; two brothers, Dan and Gary Anschutz; and two infant sisters, Judith and Mary.

     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute with Fr. Bob Stegmann as celebrant. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

     Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2017 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay with the Rosary to be prayed at 3:00 p.m. and a parish wake service to be held at 8:00 p.m., led by Fr. Anthony Birdsall. Visitation will continue at the church, Saturday morning, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
