Welcome to the memorial page for

Susan "Susie" M. Asher

March 30, 1944 ~ December 1, 2017 (age 73) 73 Years Old

Susan M. Asher, 73 years, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, December 1, 2017 at Door County Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility.

She was born March 30, 1944 in Sturgeon Bay, the daughter of the late Charles and Hilda (Roen) Asher. Susan was a graduate of Sturgeon Bay High in 1962 and honored by her peers by being chosen Homecoming Queen in 1961.

On June 6, 1966, she received her B.S. Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Child Development. During her time in Madison, Susan worked as a volunteer in the University of Wisconsin Children’s Hospital. After college, she moved to New York City where she worked at a cerebral palsy center helping children with disabilities.

In the fall of 1966, Susan was critically injured in an automobile accident while riding as a passenger with a friend from Virginia. The accident left her totally blind in addition to severe post-traumatic brain syndrome. For over 25 years, Susan was a patient of the Devereux Foundation which specializes in a variety of disabilities.

With the help of Cindy Zellner-Ehlers, Door County Developmental Disabilities Coordinator, Susan was brought back to her home in the Town of Sturgeon Bay in 1998 where she lived for the past several years until her death.

In spite of Susie’s physical limitations, she never lost her sense of humor and her love of music. Listening to music and sing-alongs with her brothers brought her much joy. Her laughter at a good joke could be heard well outside any room she was in. The company of children caused Susie to glow, as well did petting a dog. Whenever Susie was asked how she was doing, she would smile and say “no complaints”.

She is survived by her three brothers, Dr. Charles (Susan) Asher of Santa Rosa, CA [and their children, Charles Jr. (Rebecque) of Bellingham, WA, David of New York, Hadley and Spencer Asher of Santa Rosa, CA], John (Sandy) Asher of Sturgeon Bay [and their daughter, Mariah Asher of Chicago, IL, and son, David (Ashley) Schanock of Sturgeon Bay], and Steve (Rachel) Asher of Sturgeon Bay.

Her life will be honored with a funeral service held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay with John Hauser officiating. Burial will follow in Bayside Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at Huehns Funeral Home on Thursday from 12:00 noon until the time of service.

Donations in Susan’s memory may be directed to the Door County Humane Society.

A very special thank you goes out to the staff at the Skilled Nursing Facility. They not only provided loving care but a close friendship that surrounded Susie.

Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Susie may be shared with her family through her tribute page at www.huehnsfuneralhome.com.
