Mary Gordon Obituary

Mary Margaret Gordon, 79, of Sturgeon Bay, passed early Monday morning, March 19, 2018, at Sturgeon Bay Health Services.

She was born January 16, 1939 in Sturgeon Bay to the late Roderick and Margaret (Stedman) Gordon. Mary graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1957. She received her undergraduate degree from Lakeland College in 1961.

Mary worked for the U.S. Forestry Service until her retirement in the early 1990s. Her passion for the USDA Forest Service spanned her entire working life, mostly at the Arcadia, CA field office just outside the Angeles National Forest in Region 5. Mary was recognized by Forest Service leaders for her significant accomplishments and the lofty standards she held so dear throughout her long career.

She was an eccentric and a free spirit, with a quirky sense of humor. Mary was a funny, intelligent, harmless soul who loved walking, reading, spending time at the beach, and cats, having had many as pets over the years. Early in life, she enjoyed following movie stars. Mary would write to them and ask for autographed pictures. A highlight in her life was meeting JFK when he spoke at Lakeland College while he was campaigning for President.

Mary’s family includes her two half-sisters, Nancy Roberts and Judy (Lew) Juadis; brother-in-law, Joseph Bourgouin; niece, Holly (David) Weber; other nieces and nephews; and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Jean (former husband, Richard) Derenne, Betty (former husband, Don) Fries, and Georgiana Bourgouin; brother-in-law, Phillip Roberts; and step-mother, Mabel (Teske) Gordon.

Mary’s life will be honored with a memorial service held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 16, 2018 in the chapel at Bayside Cemetery with burial to follow.
