Madeline M. Bayer, 88, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away Saturday morning, August 12, 2017 at Algoma Long Term Care where she had been residing the past several weeks.

She was born May 25, 1929 in Clifton, NJ, the daughter of Anton John Bayer and Mary (Bauer) Bayer. Madeline graduated from Passaic High School in 1949 and studied art in Newark. She also studied and painted with Richard Guzman, a renowned artist from New Mexico, most known for his plein-aire (outdoor) paintings.

Madeline was a commercial artist who created works for advertising agencies and major department stores like Macy’s while in New York.

She lived a hard life, but through it all, she never lost her passion for art. Madeline loved painting with water paints and also with oil paints. She received numerous ribbons for her oil paintings. Much like her mentor, Richard Guzman, Madeline received tremendous inspiration from the beautiful landscapes around her, especially in New Mexico. Before moving to Santa Fe, NM, she lived in Door County and resided on Washington Island. Madeline returned to Door County 10 years ago and lived in Sturgeon Bay. She was raised Catholic earlier in life and was most recently a part of the Congregational Church.

Madeline is survived by her son, William David Pfaff of Sturgeon Bay; sister, Beverly Svensson of Hudson, FL; and other community friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and nephew.

In accordance with Madeline’s wishes, there will be no public services. To honor her spirit, allow yourself to notice the beauty that is all around you, consider creating art whether by painting or any other media, and never give up!

A special thanks goes out to Jacob Blazkovec of Blazcovec, Blazcovek & Downey for the wonderful assistance provided for Madeline and also to the staff of Algoma Long Term Care for the compassionate care given to her.

Huehns Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Sturgeon Bay is caring for Madeline and her family. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Madeline may be shared through her tribute page at www.huehnsfuneralhome.com.
