Joan Theresa Whitelaw, 84, of Sturgeon Bay, WI, passed away peacefully at her home at Pine Crest Village on Sunday, February 11, 2018.
She was born February 28, 1933 in Niagara, WI, the daughter of the late Anton and Elizabeth (Gaworoski) Hohol. She was the youngest of seventeen children. Joan moved to Chicago, IL in her teenage years and began working at Montgomery Wards downtown. Through a blind date, she met James Whitelaw, the love of her life, and they were united in marriage on June 27, 1959. He preceded her in death on June 18, 2007.
Joan also worked at Advance Dial until her retirement. She enjoyed traveling to visit family, spending time at the cottages, fishing, going to casinos, watching television, and spending time on her laptop computer. Later in life, Joan enjoyed beading, card art, playing cards, bowling, and socializing with her Pine Crest family, especially Arlene. She also liked helping lead exercise and the praying of the Rosary at Pine Crest.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Frank (Marie), Walter (Frances), Edward (Gilda), Joseph (Luella), John, Stanley (Betty), Henry, Chester (Lucille and Char), Anthony “Pat” (Nancy), and George (Louise) Hohol; sisters, Helen (Frank) Cabaj, Bernice (Rudy) Chromisky, Marian (Edmund) Krol, Stephanie (Bernard) Trottier, Stella (Perry) Fox, and Florence (Richard) Forsland.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, auntie, grandmother, and friend. Joan loved her family and friends and will be missed by all. She is survived by her twins: son, Jimmy (Judi Dahlquist) Whitelaw and daughter, Debbie (Paul) Whitelaw Gorski; grandsons, Tyler and Cory (fiancé, Jessica Monfils) Gorski; sisters-in-law, Nancy Hohol and Louise Hohol; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan’s life will be celebrated at Pine Crest Village, 1241 N. 18th Ave, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. with visitation beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Her life will also be celebrated at Fairview Memorial Park, 900 N. Wolf Rd., Northlake, IL 60164 on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Joan’s memory to Unity Hospice, Thresholds (Chicago), or the charity of your choice.
