Gordon “Gordy” James Schram, 90, of Sturgeon Bay, died peacefully in the comfort of his residence, Saturday morning, November 25, 2017 with his family at his side.

He was born at home on the family farm in Baileys Harbor on July 27, 1927, the son of Martin Leon Schram and Esther Margaret (Resler) Schram. Gordy attended Pershing Grade School and St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, both in Baileys Harbor. He served his country with the United States Army from October 1945 until January 1947.  Gordy was united in marriage to Bette Lou Olson in September 1950 at the St. Mary of the Lake chapel. They shared 11 years of marriage. Bette Lou passed away March 27, 2012.

Gordy worked as a finisher for Reliance Construction Company, helping to resurface and service roads throughout the state. He was proud of his work and could often recall the various projects he assisted with as he traveled some of those same roads later in life.

Gordy was a longtime of member of St. Mary of Lake Catholic Church in Baileys Harbor (now Stella Maris Parish-Baileys Harbor site). In recent years, while he was living in Sturgeon Bay, he attended St. Joseph Catholic Church. As a veteran, Gordy was a 32-year member of the American Legion Post 72 in Sturgeon Bay.

Whether you knew Gordy or were meeting him for the first time, he always greeted you with a smile and a handshake. Gordy enjoyed playing golf and was an avid card player. He liked playing sheepshead at the Door County Senior Resource Center in Sturgeon Bay and as a cribbage player, Gordy was proud to have had a 29 hand. His ability to count cards made him an excellent all-around card player. In his later years, Gordy especially appreciated going for long Door County car rides. Even though his macular degeneration increased in recent years, he was still able to recognize you by your voice.

Gordy will be missed by his daughter, Christine (Gary) Wagoner of Campbellsport; two brothers, Martin “Gene” Schram of Sturgeon Bay and Dr. Earl (Audrey) Schram of Sister Bay; four grandchildren, Patrick (Banu) Schram of Florida, Angie Schram, David (Rachel) Wagoner, both of Milwaukee, and Carrie (Kevin) Frakes of Jackson; six great-grandchildren, Megan and Matthew Wagoner, Anthony Schram, and Lori, Abby, and Hallie Frakes; sister-in-law, Charlene Schram of Green Bay; and friends.

Gordy was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Bette Lou; four children, Steven, Michael, Terrance “Terry”, and (baby) John; and brother, Darrell Schram.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Stella Maris Parish-Baileys Harbor site with Fr. David Ruby as celebrant. Gordy will be laid to rest in the church cemetery military honors by the United States Army and American Legion Post 72.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church, Wednesday morning, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.

Gordy’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Unity Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to him.
