Elizabeth Warren Obituary

Elizabeth Anne (Curran) Warren, age 90, of Egg Harbor, WI, formerly of Glencoe, IL, died early Thursday morning, May 10, 2018, Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay, WI, after a brief illness. She was surrounded in her last days by her four daughters, Kathryn, Patricia, Michele, and Deborah, sharing love and fond memories we will treasure for the rest of our lives.

Elizabeth grew up in St. Louis, MO and New York and graduated from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She married Geoffrey Warren in 1949, and together they raised their four daughters in Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, and Illinois, as he built his career with Sears, Roebuck & Company. While Elizabeth blazed many trails, as a political scientist when there were few women in the field, and as a public official, she was “Betsy” to her many friends in Glencoe, IL, where she was a long-time member of St. Elisabeth’s Episcopal Church and the garden club, and supported social agencies, including Glencoe Family Services and Senior Housing Aid.

She loved to travel, and in the years after her husband’s death, Betsy explored southern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa in a quest to learn more about the origins of the great religions of the western world. She wrote books about politics, religion, and travel and continued her study of the sources of human spirituality throughout her life. She loved her shelties and her rose garden in Egg Harbor, WI where she spent her last years. After a lifetime of good health, her illness was sudden and overwhelming. She was wonderfully cared for by the doctors, nurses, and technicians at the Door County Medical Center and by the talented and compassionate staff of Unity Hospice, to whom we daughters will be forever grateful.

Elizabeth Warren is survived by her four daughters, Kathryn Warren, Patricia Young, Michele (Mark) Mench, and Deborah (Tony) Fakonas; as well as six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Her life will be celebrated with a memorial service held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018 at St. James the Less Episcopal Church, 550 Sunset Ridge Rd., Northfield, IL 60093 with Dcn. Ron Valentine officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, beside her husband, Geoffrey.

Memories of Elizabeth’s life will also be shared during the 10:00 a.m. Sunday service on May 20, 2018 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County, 10341, Water Street, State Highway 42, Ephraim, WI 54211.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Elizabeth’s honor may be given for Unity Hospice (2366 Oak Ridge Cir., De Pere, WI 54115 OR www.unityhospice.org).
