Darla Joy Werkheiser, 72, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away late Thursday afternoon, January 2, 2020.
She was born November 4, 1947 in Escanaba, MI, the daughter of Merton Roy Rasmusson and Dorothy Mae (Doran) Rasmusson. Darla’s family moved to Door County, WI in 1953, and she attended Cherry School then Sevastopol High School. She initially worked at Grunn’s Store in Sturgeon Bay after high school. On September 28, 1971, Darla was united in marriage to Lynn Arthur Werkheiser in Kewaunee. Together, they shared over 48 years of marriage. Darla devoted most of her time to taking care of her family at home. She and Lynn continued the Werkheiser family greenhouse, “Werkheiser’s Green Acres,” on Bay Shore Drive in the Town of Egg Harbor.
Darla enjoyed crocheting afghans for babies at the Door County Memorial Hospital Birthing Center, for the senior residents of Sturgeon Bay Health Services (formerly the Dorchester) and making crafts with her children and grandchildren. She was a great baker and would help bake various treats for the Sunshine House bake sales. Darla was a wonderful wife and mother and was always there to help her kids with homework. She would do anything for anyone.
Darla’s love will live on in the hearts of her husband, Lynn; three children, Lynn Werkhesier II of the Town of Egg Harbor, Brian (Tina) Werkheiser of Sturgeon Bay, and Tina (Jerod) Kerscher of the Sturgeon Bay; seven grandchildren, Haley and Sophia Werkheiser, Emma and Connor Werkheiser, and Ethan Delfosse, Eliana, and Rylan Kerscher; three siblings, Gary (Elizabeth) Rasmusson of Forestville, Merle (Chris) Rasmusson of Sturgeon Bay, and Mary Jo (Steve) Chappell of Green Bay; siblings-in-law, Myrna Peil of Oconto, Donn Werkheiser of Sturgeon Bay, and Sandra Rasmussen of Pensacola, FL; other relatives; and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Michael (1974); two brothers, Darrell Rasmussen and Donald Rasmusson; parents-in-law, Arthur and Milda (Schulze) Werkheiser; sister-in-law, Linda Lou Werkheiser; and other relatives.
No services are scheduled to be held at this time. A celebration of life may be held at a later date. Darla will be laid to rest in Bayside Cemetery.
