Wayne Frederick Werkheiser

     Wayne F. Werkheiser, 81, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away Friday, March 24, 2017, at his home.

     He was born July 3, 1935, in Sturgeon Bay, to the late Fred and Mary (Mielke) Werkheiser. Wayne graduated from Sevastopol High School in 1953. After high school, he served his country for two years in the United States Army. On July 14, 1956, Wayne was united in marriage with the former Mary Lou Vertz at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Egg Harbor. Following his discharge from military service, they returned home to Door County. Wayne attended DeVry University for radio communications and then worked at the shipyard in Sturgeon Bay. In 1961, his father passed away, and they moved back to the Werkheiser Farm, operating the farm as a family. Wayne also worked at K&L Electric, and eventually had his own business, Werkheiser Electric, even after he retired from farming.

     Wayne adored time with his wife and family, especially enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s music and sports events. He loved watching all Wisconsin sports teams and spending time outdoors, whether it was gardening, cutting wood, or deer hunting with his son and grandson. Wayne was a faithful member of S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

     Wayne will be deeply missed by his three children, Deb (Doug) Krauel of Egg Harbor, Dan (Carla) of Green Bay, Dawn (James) Englebert of Sturgeon Bay; eight grandchildren, Travis (fiancé, Kelly Fehl) Krauel, Trent (Kelsey) Krauel, Justin (fiancé, Janel Karsten) Englebert, Amber Englebert, Amy Lou (fiancé, Ray Rismeyer) Englebert, Jordan Englebert, Tamera Werkheiser, and Danielle Werkheiser; two great-grandsons, Dominic and Kevin Krauel; and special niece, June (Don) Biemeret.

     Wayne was preceded in death by the love of his life, Mary Lou; one daughter, Diane Marie Werkheiser; his parents; brother-in-law, Cyril (Helen) Vertz; sisters-in-law, Mercedes (Stanley) Williams and Marilyn (Jim) Anschutz.

     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 27, 2017, at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute with Fr. Bob Stegmann as celebrant. Wayne will be laid to rest in the church cemetery with military honors following the Mass.

     Family and friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay, and again, Monday morning, at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. A parish wake will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Wayne’s memory to S.S. Peter and Paul Parish in Institute.
