Martha Marie Anderson, 97, of Sturgeon Bay, was called Home to the Lord on Holy Thursday, April 13, 2017 while at Good Samaritan Society-Scandia Village in Sister Bay with family at her side.

She was born March 9, 1920 in the Town of Nasewaupee, the daughter of Henry J. and Hannah (Magle) Michaels. Martha attended St. Joseph School. After the death of her mother, she went to Chicago to work at age 15, as a private family nanny. Martha finished her two-year study at Beautician School and worked in Michigan, Kewaunee, and Sturgeon Bay. She married Marshall H. Johnson on February 15, 1941. He preceded her in death on September 10, 1943 following his battle with Polio. On August 4, 1945, Martha was united in marriage to Leon Arthur Anderson in Kewaunee. They were blessed with over 50 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on June 14, 1996.

She was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Sturgeon Bay and its Christian Mothers. Martha enjoyed sewing, loved cooking and baking, but most important in her life was the love of family.

Her family includes her four children, Thomas (Ginnie) Anderson of Omro, Robert “Andy” (Beth) Anderson of St. Augustine, FL, Nancy (Mark) Hicks of Valmy, and Scott (DeAnne) Anderson of Appleton; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Virgil Michaels of Manitowoc; and sister-in-law, Gail Michaels.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Hannah Michaels; husband, Leon Anderson; six brothers, Harold, Floyd, Ralph, Robert, Bernard and Henry; sister, Grace Bunker; and sister-in-law, Angela Michaels.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Stegmann as celebrant. Martha will be laid to rest in Nicolet Memorial Gardens, Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum in the Town of Scott.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. A rosary will be prayed at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be given in Martha’s memory for St. Joseph Parish or the St. Joseph Educational Endowment Fund.

Martha was a beautiful lady both inside and out. She was a sweet and endearing woman, with a wonderful smile, who through the trials of life carried herself with dignity, learning that family togetherness was most important.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5
