Harriet M. Henkel

Harriet M. Henkel, 96, of Sturgeon Bay, died Sunday evening, October 4, 2015, at the Skilled Nursing Facility at Ministry Door County Medical Center.

She was born November 11, 1918, in Carlsville, the daughter of the late Charles and Rose (Wenk) Carmody. Following graduation from high school, she worked in the shipyards as a welder during WWII. On June 10, 1944, she married Leonard John Henkel at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Institute. He preceded her in death on May 17, 1991.

Harriet was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay, Christian Women, Catholic Daughters, and a charter member of the Peninsula Planters Garden Club. She was a great cook, gardener, and loved decorating her home. Many will remember her famous poppy seed cake she made for all of the funeral lunches at St. Joseph’s.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan (life partner, Don Nolan) Scott of Port Edwards, WI; two grandsons, Aaron Scott of Richmond, VA, and Kyle Scott of Madison.

Harriet was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Rose Carmody; husband, Leonard Henkel; two sisters, Mildred Ade, Irene Worachek; and two brothers, Arnold and Evert Carmody.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Bob Stegmann as celebrant. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Mausoleum.
