I have had the opportunity to know Mike for 6+ years through our monthly book club meetings. Mike was truly a "Good Guy", fun to be with, articulate, and a good friend. Whether it was serious discussions at book club, telling a story on the golf course, or simply bull shitting at the "Y", it was always a pleasure to be around Mike. I know he will be missed, but more importantly, he will be remembered by all.
My sincere condolences,
Ken Warren

Dear Sally,
I feel like I have lost a brother. I was privileged to be your grade school and high school friend as well as your college roommate. One of the most beautiful experiences for me was to watch your relationship with Mike grow. Like it or not he was very disciplined about studying. It amazed me that he was so well prepared for his exams that he played cards the night before.
We love Mike for many reasons. He was always sincerely interested in our lives yet he never complained.
Mike has definitely made a difference in this world for the better: being a great husband and father, friend and teacher and a man with outstanding values who shared his passions.
Physically we miss him but spiritually he is with us
I regret not being able to make it for the celebration of his life and to be there for you and your family.
Love, Mary O'B

The O'Brien family is in our prayers as we remember our special times with Mike over the years. He and Sally were always such gracious hosts during our visits to Door County, opening up their gorgeous home to all. There was nothing better than watching the sunset over Clark Lake and enjoying a lively discussion by the fire. With his sharp wit and wide-ranging interests, Mike would make each evening memorable. We're grateful to have known Mike and are deeply saddened by his passing.
Love,
Bryan, Deb, Acadia and Hudson Berry

Sorrry for your loss. Mike was one of those extraordinary teachers that made a lasting mark on my life, and deep and abiding interest in history. Teaching is not the process of filling a bucket, but of lighting the fire of curiousity. May Mike Rest In Peace.

I was lucky enough to take a class of Dr. O'Briens' at UWC-Fox, & I thoroughly enjoyed it; have never forgotten it, or him.
He was a very fine teacher who made his passion for history fascinating to us students, & he was a nice, kind human being who will be greatly missed.
My sympathy goes to his family.....

Professor Obrien inspired me in my first years at UW Fox. His passion for history engaged the reluctant learner in me. I often talk about how I despised history until I took his class and listened to his vast knowledge of our history. He changed me and opened doors that I never imagined could be opened. Sorry for your loss and please know that his love of history lives on in many.
