Cora Sue Acor

February 24, 1945 ~ September 7, 2016 (age 71) 71 Years Old


     Cora Sue Acor, 71, of the Town of Gibraltar (Fish Creek), WI, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at Ministry Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay, WI, with family at her side, following a recent illness.

     She was born February 24, 1945 in Gary, IN, the daughter of James C. and Helen L. (Lucas) Acor. Cora graduated from Crown Point High School in Indiana 1963. Her parents moved to Medford, WI, and she went on to study education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where she earned her bachelor’s degree.

     Cora devoted her life to education and lifelong learning. She began as a kindergarten teacher in Crown Point in 1967. That following year, Cora taught elementary in Northbrook, IL. In 1970, she returned home to Wisconsin and taught in Rosholt. Three years later, she taught with Reading Tomorrow’s Youth. In 1975, she accepted a Chapter 1 reading specialist position. She became a Chapter 1 consultant for CESA the following year and held that position for four years. Cora earned her Masters of Education from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1978. She served as the elementary supervisor director of curriculum for the Adams-Friendship School District from 1980 until 1993 when she became the district administrator for Herman School District #22 and retired from there in 2004. Cora was a member of the Wisconsin Association of District Administrators (WASDA).

     She loved traveling throughout the United States and Europe and going on cruises. In her later years, Cora enjoyed spending time in Scottsdale, AZ, with friends. She relocated to Door County in the early 2000s. Cora had a passion for crafting jewelry and even had a section of her home dedicated for that. She shared her passion with others by teaching at the Peninsula School of Art where she also was a member of the board of directors. Cora attended the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Ephraim.

     Her memory will live on in the lives of all those whom she inspired during her career in education; her Peninsula School of art colleagues and students; her good friends; and many cousins.

     Cora was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Alice “Butch” Acor.

     Friends are invited to gather in honor of Cora at the Peninsula School of Art, 3900 County Road F, Fish Creek, WI 54212 on Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

     Memorials may be given in Cora’s memory for the Peninsula School of Art.
