Marion Iola (Solway) Schuster

Marion Iola (Solway) Schuster of Sturgeon Bay passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the Golden Living Center - Dorchester.

She was born October 16, 1927 to Eli & Laura (Abrahamson) Solway. She was a descendant of Salvi Salvison, an early settler of Sturgeon Bay who emigrated from Stavanger, Norway to Wisconsin in 1853.

Marion graduated from Sevastopol High School in 1945. She then took a Secretarial Course at Milwaukee Business School. Since her father worked for Reynolds Orchards, she grew up surrounded by the cherry orchards. On September 13, 1947 she married Roger Schuster who preceded her in death March 24, 2004.

In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Marion helped her aunts and uncles at the Sunnyside Resort on Bay Shore Drive by serving meals in the dining hall. The resort, on the Salvison[Solway] homestead and farm, was popular with visitors from the Chicago and Milwaukee areas.

Marion was a lifetime member of St. Peters Ev. Lutheran Church and active in the Rachel Circle up into her eighties. She was an ardent volunteer, helping with the St Peter confirmation program, Door County School Health Screenings, The Ridges Sanctuary, and the Peninsula Players Theatre among others. She also enjoyed attending the performing arts at Third Avenue Playhouse, Peninsula Players and American Folklore Theater; as well as visits from family, and friends, letter writing, talking to everyone, and spending time at the family homestead property, "The Shore" on Bay shore Drive (

Survivors include five of her six sons; Richard (Rita Malueg), William (Sonja Pierzchalski), Peter (Carol Wolfe), Paul (Lynn Stracka), and Mark (Stacia Dick), all of Sturgeon Bay and daughter-in-law; Nancy (Laubenstein) Schuster Hammell (Pat Hammell) of West Bend; seven grandchildren; Gretchen (Patrick) Johnson of Sister Bay, Jeremy Schuster (special friend Angie) of Fredonia, Ian (Michelle Polich) Schuster of Lakewood, CO, Allison (Josh) Pfister of Sturgeon Bay, Dennis (Ann Hogan) Ploor of Sturgeon Bay, Michael (Mel Caves) of Suamico, Jeffrey (Penny Ploeckelman) Ploor of Kiel; twelve great-grandchildren; Brandt Bauldry, Mason Bauldry, Summer Johnson, Eli Schuster, Liberty Pfister, Kolt Pfister, Cody Ploor, Brendan Ploor, Demitra Ploor, Mya Ploor, Sara Ploor, Emma Ploor.

She is also survived by five sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law; Karen (Paschke) Solway of Sturgeon Bay, Charlotte Schneider of Algoma, Gail (Doug) Greaves of Menasha, Joan (Gary) Wodack of Sturgeon Bay, Suzanne (Robert) Wessel of Forestville and Doug (Roberta) Schuster of Ringle.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Roger (2004), son David (1994), and brother Herbert Solway (2001).

Funeral services will be held at St. Peters Ev. Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Darrick Kolterjahn officiating.

Friends may call at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay on Saturday, March 30, 2013, from 9:30 a.m. until noon and then at the church on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services at 2:00 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Peters Ev. Lutheran School, The Shore LLC, or the charity of your choice in her memory.
